Thankful Thursday

Thursday, August 26, 2010

This week I am thankful for...

1.  Shiney, clean rings.  David and I try to get our wedding rings cleaned (and my engagement ring checked out for loose stones) once a year around our anniversary.  We finally took them this past weekend and then I picked them up on Monday.  I'm always surprised by how brand new and gorgeous they look...and how perfect a design he picked for me.

2.  Play dates with like-minded moms.  Because we've all had a few of those that you're thinking, "man, if I can just get through this one I will say I'm booked up for the next six months until she gets the hint."  It means so much to me to surround myself with women who are trying to instill the same values and manners in their children, even if our kids can barely walk.  AJ and I had a great time with just such a friend and her daughter on Monday.  She's such a wonderful mom and a sweet friend and I can't wait to continue watching our little girls grow up together.

3.  Fleet Feet.  If you're a runner and you've never heard of them, you've got to check them out.  David and I went in for a fitting this week and, while they do carry pricier brands (or higher end lines of regular brands),  my feet feel amazing in the shoes.  We're going running in them for the first time tomorrow, but I can already tell that we're going to be faster. :)

4.  New restaurants with old friends.  We had a double-date last night at Bonefish and the food was almost as good as the conversation...which is saying a lot.  I'm not a huge seafood fan, but I got the sirloin and crab cake and it was delicious.  I should know, too, because I've had Maryland crab cakes in Maryland on more than one occasion.  We so enjoyed the company and reminiscing.  To top it all off, as I exclaimed on Facebook, I didn't have to cut anyone's food for them and the only person I had to feed was myself!

5.  Consignment sales/stores.  Be sure to visit my other blog at www.imperfectperfectionist.com for a more detailed explanation and some tips.

Check back early next week because I've got a really fun post in store for you!

Thankful Thursday

This week I am thankful for...

1.  David being home from his whirlwind trip to Switzerland and Germany.  This trip was a lot shorter than they usually are, thank goodness.  Plus, I had a lot of visits from family.  The way it worked out, I think I actually had more help than I do when he's in town!  Which of course, I am very grateful for (thanks Ed, Pam, Mom, and Dad!)

It's never easy, though, especially now that Audrey is old enough to know he's gone and miss him.  She was so excited to see him when he got home tonight.  We sat down for dinner soon after he arrived and in between each bite, she would point at him, grin, and say "Da-da!  Da-da!"

2.  That David is a sweet (wise) husband and will be taking tomorrow off of work to soak up some time with us!  Then, on Saturday, we have a hot date planned.  I think it's going to involve shopping for new running shoes and a trip Wolf Camera.  Yeah, we're wild and crazy like that.

3.  Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Fluff sandwiches.  I had heard of this phenomenon from several different people and seen it on tv shows, but had never tried it.  Until, that is, about a week ago when my mouth was hurting so badly from the aligning trays that I needed something soft and was tired of PBJs.  I wouldn't say I love it, but it was definitely good and is worth repeating.

4.  New placemats for our kitchen table.  Because it really does only take a little tweak to make a big, bright difference!

5.  Good family recipes.  For Christmas, my mother-in-law gave me a recipe box with a bunch of family recipes in it.  She'd asked all the women on her side of the family as well as my Mom to contribute some of their favorites.  (This is an AMAZING gift idea, by the way.)  As I was going through and organizing them this week (Okay...you caught me.  I finally had them laminated and was cutting and filing them), I was once again reminded what a blessing it is to have all of these treasured family heirlooms.  It also reminded me that I'm way past due for trying some of them out!  We'll see if any special dishes make Thankful Thursday posts in the future!

Have a great Friday and a good weekend - I know we will! :)

Thankful Thursday with a Twist

Thursday, August 12, 2010

I'm changing it up today.  Instead of writing five things I'm thankful for, I've decided to write five things I bet you didn't know were going on with me right now.  Okay, some of you probably already know about a few of them.  And yes, this is basically an update in disguise.  But it's a more fun way of doing an update!  So, play along and read on:

1.  I am currently planning a reunion for my old youth group.  A friend from "way back then" contacted me on Facebook and asked if I would be interested in helping her put something together.  Like me, she and some of the people she was still in contact with were so much closer to their church friends than their school friends and wanted to get together.  So, it's in the works and will be happening in just a few weeks.  I'm so excited about seeing everyone!

2.  Yesterday, I got my first set of Invisalign trays for my teeth.  Or rather, my dentist's version of Invisalign, which is called Essix.  If you haven't heard of these, they are removable trays that you wear 22 out of 24 hours a day (you only remove them to eat) that slowly guide your teeth back into place.  As your teeth shift, you get a new set of trays, which is about once a month.  Then, when you're finished realigning the teeth, you get a retainer to wear at night for the rest of your life.  Sexy, I know.

My teeth aren't that bad now, but they're certainly not getting better and will definitely be in bad shape in 5-10 years.  So, I decided to go ahead and get the work done now when it will only take 3-4 months' commitment as opposed to later, when it could take much longer to readjust or require metal braces.  The pain was really rough yesterday - they had to sand off parts of some of my teeth to make room plus the trays are incredibly tight at first.  But, it has eased off quite a bit today.  I might even feel like chewing by dinnertime!  Hopefully, by Christmas, I'll have a new, straightened, gorgeous smile!

3.  David and I are trying to get back into running.  To help motivate us to stick with it, we've signed up for a couple of 5Ks in the coming months.  The first one will be next month and it's one we've run a few times before.  We're looking forward to getting back into this healthy habit together!  (Okay, I'm looking forward to it.  David is joining me because he'd rather do that than listen to me nag.)

4.  We've been visiting a new church the past couple of weeks and are really enjoying it!  Our plan is to join a small group for the upcoming semester and then see where God leads us from there.

And, lastly, the latest with AJ.  I know I updated not too long ago, so some of these may be a repeat.  They're still cute, though:

5.  She's walking like a pro and learning new words every day.  We've been working very hard on "please" lately, but because we taught her "more" first, she uses that in its place.  She loves books and will often sit in the floor and flip through them herself.  She frequently requests "E-I-E-I" (Old McDonald) and loves music and dancing.  She also really likes having her teeth brushed and brushing the "teeth" of her baby dolls with an old toothbrush.  She's learning to share more and more everyday, so next time you visit, beware that you just might get a sippy cup jammed in your mouth.  Is there any greater love?

Have a happy Friday!

Car Seat Safety

Saturday, August 7, 2010

Did you know that 7 out of 10 car seats are installed improperly?  Or that the 1 year/20 pound weight guideline for switching to a forward facing is a minimum?  Now it's actually recommend by the American Academy of Pediatrics to keep your child's car seat rear facing as long as possible, up to age two and/or the manufacturer's weight specifications for that seat.

Check out these websites for additional information and locations to get your car seat inspected:

I wanted to share a few cute stories from this week before I post my list.  These may only be cute to me and the grandparents, but here they are anyway:

 - Audrey and I were walking through Best Buy and she got so excited about the washing machines and dryers.  She ran up to them and started banging on the doors.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, she has starting "helping" me with laundry so she was so happy at the sight of the machines.

- I told Audrey we were having hot dogs for dinner tonight and she made the "woof, woof" sound.

- A few days ago, Audrey started taking a dive on the family room floor just to get a laugh out of us.  We stopped laughing when we realized she was doing it on purpose, of course, but we may have a little comedian on our hands.

- When David was singing "Old McDonald" to Audrey (a favorite around here), he got to the "on that farm he had a..." and asked Audrey what animal the farmer should have.  She said "Moo."  On the next verse, he asked and she said "Baaa."  Awesome.

Now here is this week's list:

1.  Cooler temps earlier this week.  Audrey and I soaked up some quality time outside walking, running, and hitting the park.  I think the poor girl had forgotten what swings were!  It's amazing how cool 80 degrees feels when you've been in the upper 90s for so long!

2.  Audrey's tiny hands that grab mine as she says "Go, go, go!" or upturned palms as she inflects an "UH?" wondering where something went (even if she's doing her "magic trick" and hiding a block in her table compartment.  Then she'll open it up, pull it out, and hold it out to you with a huge grin.  It's hilarious!)

3.  A new label maker.  I cannot believe I'm going to admit it, but I actually misplaced mine.  (And the world fell apart for a day, too!)  I think it must be packed away in a Rubbermaid container somewhere.  Regardless, I finally broke down and got a replacement this week.  That's a surefire way to get something to show up again, right?!

4.  Back to school season.  I have always loved this time of year.  For me it meant a fresh clean slate and returning to a familiar routine.  Seeing school supplies everywhere makes me so excited about the day Audrey and I will get to go pick them out.  It'll make her going growing up only slightly more bearable.

5.  Ice cream for a good cause.  Today was Miracle Treat Day at DQ, and a portion of the proceeds from all blizzards were going to Children's Miracle Network.  We just had to go get some tonight, of course.  Sometimes doing the right thing is easy (and delicious!)  Next time I'll try to post such critical news ahead of time so you can plan accordingly!

Have a happy Friday!

Our Anniversary Weekend

Monday, August 2, 2010

What an incredible weekend!  David and I decided that for this anniversary we were going to leave Audrey with her grandparents overnight for the first time and celebrate in style, just the two of us.

(Funny side note:  Our fifth anniversary last year was the first time we let them keep Audrey.  We went out to dinner and to the bookstore and were gone for a total of a couple of hours.  It felt like an eternity.)

So, on Friday night, I started packing for our big weekend.  There was definitely an hour or two that I questioned whether I was really going to be able to leave my baby.  I knew, though, that it was never going to be easy.  I was sure I didn't want to become one of those couples with teenagers who have  never left their kids overnight.  I ignored the butterflies and choked back the tears as I placed her favorite doll and a few books in her suitcase.

We woke up Saturday morning and finished packing the entire house, as is my usual tendency.  We drove out to Davids' parents, feeling both giddy and nervous.  After we set up her pack n' play, monitor, and sound machine, I went over every post-it note, the printed schedule, and the emergency info list.  To her credit, his mom took it like a champ.  They are well-accustomed to my OCD ways by now and understand that it has nothing to do with me not trusting their ability.  It's more my feeble attempt at doing all I can to make sure things go smoothly.  Am I a control freak?  Uh...yeah.  Anyway, with the debriefing finished, we sat down and ate lunch.  After we finished, David was hinting it was time to go.  He realized it wasn't going to get any easier for me and mimed the motion of ripping off a bandaid.  I hugged her close, gave her a kiss and told her I loved her.  I only teared up a little as we got in the car, and to my surprise, the tears were dry as soon as we got back on the interstate.

We arrived at the W Hotel and checked in.  It's a little more trendy than we're used to, but we booked on Priceline.com, so you can only choose the location and star rating, not the exact hotel.  It's a great way to save some money, though, as our stay was about 60% off what it would have been through another website or the hotel directly.  We got settled and decided to check out the pool.  It was pretty crowded and there weren't any empty chairs, so we went back up to our room and watched a movie.  We had thought about going to see Inception with the rest of the world, but there wasn't a good start time that fit our schedule.  It was much more relaxing to lounge in bed and watch one there, though.  A whole movie in one sitting without being interrupted!  Nice, huh?!

When it was over, we got changed and headed out for dinner.  We walked around the mall a bit and then  went over to Maggiano's.  That restaurant has such special meaning for us - we celebrated many Valentine's Days, proms, and dating anniversaries there, David took me there the night he proposed, we ate there with his family when he graduated college, and our rehearsal dinner was in one of their banquet rooms.  So many anniversaries, birthdays, and "just cause we want somewhere nice" meals have been enjoyed at Maggiano's, so it seemed like the perfect choice for another special night.

We ordered our usual - chicken parmigiana, fettucini alfredo, and garlic mashed potatoes - and split it all.  We talked about the past and our goals for the future.  We discussed our dreams and wishes for our next house (which is years down the road, but still fun to think about) and just shared our lives.  I love that after a decade together (4 years dating + 6 years of marriage) we still have stuff to talk about.  The food was delicious, too, of course, but the conversation and company were by far the best parts.

After we finished, we decided our night of gluttony wouldn't be complete without a slice of cheesecake form the Cheesecake Factory next door.  We walked over, ordered one to go, and waddled back to the car.  When we returned to the hotel, we changed into our bathing suits and decided to go down to the pool for a bit.  It was less crowded and we lounged around watched the other couples and families.  There was a baby there enjoying the water, which made me miss Audrey terribly, but we knew she was having a great time and was probably already fast asleep.

When it started getting dark and the fear of bug bites (I'm a magnet for any and every kind) took over, we went upstairs.  I'd brought the journal that I wrote during our honeymoon, so we popped open a bottle of champagne, dug out our cheesecake, and read and reminisced and celebrated.

The next morning, after a less than perfect night's sleep (I was up from 3am - 5am due to loud neighbors, not my worries about AJ), David woke me up and said it was almost 9:00am.  9:00?!  I hadn't slept in that late in 407 days!  Okay, maybe when AJ was just days or weeks old and I hadn't set a wake-up time for her yet, but that would be after getting up 3-4 times at night, so it hardly counts.  Anyway, we got dressed, checked out, and headed over to make our 10:30am brunch reservation.  As is usually the case with breakfast, we couldn't hold nearly as much as we wanted to eat, but we did our best.

After that we went to the Container Store (heaven on earth to me) and the PGA Superstore (heaven on earth to David).  We stopped by another place or two on our way back up to his parents', but were getting anxious to get there and see Audrey.  When we walked in, almost exactly 24 hours after we'd left her, she immediately broke into a huge grin and walked over to me with her arms outstretched.  I snatched her up and gave her a huge hug, certain that she felt bigger and heavier in my arms than the day before.  We hung out there and played for a little while before heading home.

When we got back, we put Audrey down for a short nap and decided we'd catch one too.  When she woke up, we went out to dinner and, since we'd skipped lunch and all, decided to indulge in Five Guys.  As if the weekend hadn't held enough delicious calories.  We got home, fed Audrey, and played with her until it was bath time.  We wrapped up the night with story time and prayers, then we put her to bed.  A perfect ending to a perfect weekend.  She did great, I did great, and his parents did great (as if there was any doubt.)  It was a much-needed break and I'm grateful to them for giving it to us.  We'll be planning another one very soon.

So, in closing, I want to wish a Happy Anniversary to the Love of my Life!  As I said when we toasted our six years, "Here's to six more."  To which David replied "That's all? Just six?!"  and I answered, "We'll see how the next six go and then reevaluate."

Rest assured, babe, I have no doubt they're going to be as amazing as the last.
