Ode to a Bagel

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Oh morning bagel. I miss you. I miss the process of preparing and devouring you. Getting out the toaster, setting it up, and hovering to make sure you tan to just the right shade of brown. Placing you on my pretty Southern Living cinnabar plate. (You deserve the best, you know.) Slathering cream cheese - sometimes strawberry, sometimes plain - on you in pretty wavy configurations. Pairing you with a nice cup of decaf or, if it's been a particularly rough night, popping open a can of the hard stuff...a real coke. Taking a bite of your crusty then soft carbohydrate goodness while watching the morning news. What a wonderfully delicious way to start the day.

But you don't love me back, do you? No, you don't. If you did, you wouldn't go straight to my thighs and, despite your calorie count, leave me hungry mere hours later. You wouldn't spike my blood sugar then sending it crashing down, causing me to feel tired when I have a baby who won't allow such a thing.

Sure, we can meet again occasionally. But the daily dates are over. And while I miss them, the good news is that I've started seeing someone new. Several someones, actually. Risky, huh? Truthfully, my husband doesn't mind. You see, my new crushes happen to be my smaller clothes. I hate to say it, but they are way better looking than you. They aren't round and holey and boringly colored. And they love me back.

Thankful Thursday and an Update

Thursday, March 25, 2010

What a great week it's been since my last post. We had my niece Annelise's birthday party at our house on Saturday and it was wonderful. She was so beautiful and such a trooper as we put her through the typical one year old's birthday festivities: lots of unfamiliar faces singing weird songs at you, passing you around and calling your name for pictures, then watching and clapping as you open weirdly colored packages. It's enough to stress anyone out, but she was so sweet and patient. Blue icing in her hair and all, she was precious. It was great to see her and the rest of my family and spend the day celebrating what a gift she is.

After we recouped from all the excitement, I hit the ground running preparing a talk for my Thursday morning Bible Study class. (We typically spend an hour doing Bible Study and an hour covering a home-management topic.) Our teacher asked me to share about getting and staying organized, so I spent a few days researching and writing out my thoughts on the subject. I plan on posting the stuff I wrote eventually, so you can look forward to that enthralling read!

In AJ news, she is doing great. She turned 9 months old on Saturday and is such a sweet baby. She wants to pull up on everything and LOVES to hold our hands and walk around the house. She has also mastered walking around her Leap Frog table while holding onto the gadgets. She officially crawled on March 14th, but she doesn't really know she can do it yet if that makes sense. We think she just assumes she's reaching little by little. She still cracks up at peek-a-boo and I can usually get her laughing just by laughing. She doesn't have her "pincher-grasp" mastered just yet, so she picks up Cheerios or other finger foods, holds on to them tightly, then just kind of licks her fist. She loves making "motor-boat" sounds and moving her fingers across her lips while making noise. Just the other day, she realized she can put her foot in her mouth. (Hopefully she won't be as good at doing that figuratively.) She loves to point at everything and scrunches up her face because she knows it makes us laugh. She plays by herself very well if I'm nearby and is clearly exhibiting signs of early genius as she entertains herself and observes the world.

So, that is us lately. Here is this week's list:

1. Our niece Annelise who's official birthday is tomorrow. Happy Birthday, sweet girl! We love you!

2. Fitting into single digit size pants. I've been working my butt off (literally) and, though I'm not there yet, I'm getting closer!

3. David taking off an hour early yesterday. We went to the park and let Audrey try out the swings before enjoying a walk in the beautiful weather.

4. Apple juice. I stole a little glass from Audrey's stash. Is it strange that it makes me want club crackers though? Too many years of that snack combination in Sunday School, I suppose.

5. New music. Several of my favorite artists have put out some good stuff recently (Norah Jones, for one). Time to reload the iPod!

Enjoy your weekend!

I do so wish I had more time to write this evening, but it's way past my bedtime. I've got another full few days ahead and need my sleep. Hopefully I'll get the opportunity for more updates soon!

Until then, here is this week's list:

1. Warm weather and sunshine. Finally. Could it be here to stay? I hope so. I know the pollen is coming, but for now, it's perfect.

2. NBC's new show The Marriage Ref. I've only watched three episodes and one of them was awful. The other two, however, have been hilarious. As creator Jerry Seinfield said, it's only funny because it's not your fight.

3. Ribbon. It makes things pretty.

4. Consignment sales. Kids outgrow clothes quickly, so it's great to find gently used stuff at bargain prices. Like most women, I also like the trill of the hunt. I actually consider it a sport. Moreso than, say, bowling or curling at least.

5. Cute pajama sets. Going to bed in a t-shirt full of holes and ratty pants used to be my norm until I discovered how a set of comfortable, coordinated pajamas will boost your mood. Really, they do! I still like my old t-shirts, but now they're more the exception than the rule. I'm sure David appreciates that too.

Time to hit the sack in my fancy pj's!

Today started off a little rough. Audrey was on her second day of a cold, so I was attempting to be extra patient with her. I was trying to get out the door to Bible study and I couldn't find my cell phone anywhere. I jumped in the car and realized immediately that the dirty diaper I'd changed in the backseat two days ago never made it to the garbage can. It was raining, I was late, and now I ran the risk of showing up smelling like 2-day old poop. Lovely.

But, I made it. The ladies in the group either pretended that I didn't smell or I actually escaped the stench rubbing off. We had a great study, as usual, and the day ended much more smoothly than it began.

Here is this week's list:

1. Umbrellas. Especially big ones that cover me, my baby, my purse, the diaper bag, the shopping bags...

2. Clothes from Grandmas. I think it must be impossible for a grandmother to show up for a visit with her granddaughter without having a new clothing item in her hand. Audrey is one well-dressed little lady, largely because of her generous grandmothers!

3. Fabric softener. I only use it for towels and sheets, but I love how cuddly soft and sweet-scented it makes them.

4. #2 pencils. I thoroughly enjoy writing a list on a legal pad with a #2 pencil.

5. Progress. Whether it be physical, project-oriented, or personal growth related, progress feels so good and I'm grateful when it makes an appearance!

Yet another busy party planning, Bible study doing, play date going, errand running week. I'm tired and ready for this weekend and a little break from the busyness. David and I are hoping to squeeze in a lunch date too, but may settle for some fast food and a nap instead.

Here is this week's list:

1. That it is March. Which SURELY means it's going to get warmer soon, right? I know, I know. Last week I was just thankful for the sunshine. This week, however, I would also like 20 more degrees. Picky, picky.

2. The color blue. Whether it's Audrey's eyes, our bedroom walls, the sky, or a favorite sweater, it's a really great color.

3. Handwritten notes. Few things can brighten your day like seeing a special envelope amidst a stack of bills and junk mail.

4. The Olympics being over. I know the athletes train from the time they can walk and work harder physically before breakfast than I will in my entire life. They strive to be the best and compete with the cream of the crop. They sacrifice more than I can imagine and represent their countries with pride. All of that is wonderful and I do think it's neat to watch for a little while. Just not for two weeks straight.

5. A new Facebook page I came across titled "'Let's eat Grandma!' or, 'Let's eat, Grandma!' Punctuation saves lives." So funny!

Enjoy your weekend and, hopefully, warmer temps!
